Chapter 6

It was time to get back to San Francisco. Johnny and I left early that morning. He told the guy in the black suit that we had to go into town for some grocery shopping. We did, but we weren’t coming back. I drove to Frisco with one thing on my mind. I had to let Derrick know that his little paramour was not as innocent as he thought, but I really hadn’t decided whether I should tell him at this time.

They always shoot the messenger.

I remember a guy telling his friend about his wife being unfaithful. The husband got a gun and shot him. Well it was more to it than that: the guy doing the telling was his friend and he was doing his wife. The boyfriend was angry because she had dumped him for another man, and he was stupid enough to tell the husband. It was a nasty affair. No one wins in those situations. So, with that in mind, I decided not to tell Derrick about Mary until it was absolutely necessary.

My time at the mansion was not at all wasteful because I took some photos and papers while I was messing around dusting in Van Rutledge’s room. I could tell from his pictures that he had once been hot and still had an erotic presence that appeal to some women looking for a rich good-looking dude. His wife with mousey brown hair and large eyes, a homely woman about forty, had seen better days, and the pictures of her sitting in a wheelchair were not flattering. She was long pass being happy.

I couldn’t wait to see what was in the manila envelope. I’m not into breaking and entering, but I had to pry open the draw to see what he didn’t want others to see. When people try to hide things it’s usually because they don’t want anyone to see the other side of their face. I could tell there was more to him than that expensive suit, expensive haircut, expensive watch and that handsome face and smile.

I dropped Johnny home early Saturday morning, and then headed to my apartment. I rushed upstairs without telling anyone what I had in my possession. Johnny wasn’t interested; he had a lot of explaining to do to his wife.

I opened the door and was relieved that Derrick wasn’t waiting for me. I was getting use to him coming into my apartment. I threw the envelope on the bed and dashed into the shower. The water, warm and soothing, washed my thoughts of the day away. I needed to clean my hair and get comfortable before I tackled anything that had to do with finding Mary. I really didn’t want to find her, but I took Derrick’s money, and my mama always said, don’t mess with a black man’s money if you don’t plan to give him interest on it.

I got out a hot comb and pressed my hair, which took two hours. Then I found something to eat.
